Nile Cruise Planning: Practical Tips for First-Time Travelers

How Nile cruises actually work: routes, ship types, what is included, which temples you see on which day, and how to choose between a cruise ship, a dahabiya and a felucca.

A Nile cruise is the part of an Egypt itinerary that travellers remember most, and it is also the part most often booked blind. Ships differ enormously, the standard three- and four-night routes are not interchangeable, and "all-inclusive" means different things on different vessels. This guide explains how the river actually works.

Why cruise at all

The temples between Luxor and Aswan sit on the riverbank because the Nile was the highway that built them. Sailing between them puts the sites in the order and the landscape they were designed for, and it removes the driving, the packing and the hotel changes: you unpack once and the country moves past your window. It is the single most efficient and the most beautiful way to see Upper Egypt.

The two standard routes

Luxor to Aswan4UpstreamKarnak, Luxor Temple, Valley of the Kings, Edfu, Kom Ombo, Philae
Aswan to Luxor3DownstreamPhilae, Kom Ombo, Edfu, west bank, Karnak

The three-night sailing is faster and cheaper; the four-night gives you a genuine extra day and usually a calmer pace on the west bank. Abu Simbel is not on either route — it is a separate excursion from Aswan by road or short flight, covered in our Abu Simbel guide.

Choosing your vessel

Cruise ships

Five-deck vessels carrying 60–150 guests, with a pool, sundeck, restaurant and evening entertainment. Stable, comfortable and good value, with cabins from around 16–25m². The best ships feel like a good river hotel; the weakest feel dated, and the gap between them is the single biggest quality variable in an Egypt itinerary.

Dahabiyas

Small sailing boats with 8–12 cabins, no engine noise under sail, and the ability to moor at islands and villages the large ships cannot reach. Slower, quieter, and the choice most of our luxury travellers prefer once they understand the trade-off: fewer facilities, far more atmosphere. See our luxury Nile cruise comparison.

Feluccas

Traditional open sailing boats used for a few hours or a single night, with basic or no cabins. Wonderful for a sunset around Aswan, and a real adventure overnight, but not a substitute for a cruise. We compare them properly in felucca vs Nile cruise.

What is included — and what is not

Almost always included: cabin, full board, sundeck and pool access, and onboard tea and coffee.

Usually not included: site entrance tickets, guiding, drinks, tips for the crew, the Abu Simbel excursion, the hot-air balloon over the west bank, and the sound and light shows. When you compare two cruise prices, this is where the difference usually hides. On our itineraries, entrance fees and private Egyptologist guiding are handled for you — the detail is on the Nile cruises page.

A typical day on board

Early call and a temple visit before the heat, breakfast back on board, sailing through the middle of the day with the landscape sliding past, an afternoon site or free time, then dinner and a quiet deck under a sky you cannot see from a city. The rhythm is what people fall for.

Practical notes

  • Mooring: in busy periods ships raft side by side, so you may walk through a neighbouring vessel to reach the bank. Normal, and briefly surprising.
  • Motion: the river is calm. Seasickness is essentially a non-issue.
  • Wi-Fi: available on most ships, unreliable between towns.
  • Dress: relaxed by day, smart-casual at dinner. Bring a warm layer for the deck between November and February — see the packing checklist.
  • Best season: October to April. Full detail in best time to visit Egypt.

Where the cruise fits in a full itinerary

The classic structure is three nights in Cairo for Giza, Saqqara and the Grand Egyptian Museum, a short flight to Luxor or Aswan, three or four nights sailing, and an optional beach extension on the Red Sea. That is the backbone of our 10-day Egypt itinerary, and the version most first-time travellers should book.

How to choose well

Ask three questions: how many guests are on board, what is included beyond the cabin, and who is guiding you at each temple. The ship determines your comfort; the guide determines what you understand. If you would like a specific recommendation for your dates, our team in Egypt will match a vessel to your budget and pace — start on the Nile cruises page or tell us your dates on design my trip.

Frequently asked questions

How many nights should a Nile cruise be?+

Four nights sailing Luxor to Aswan is the better choice for most travellers: it adds a full day and eases the pace on the Luxor west bank. Three nights from Aswan to Luxor covers the same temples more quickly.

What is included on a Nile cruise?+

Cabin, full board and sundeck access are standard. Site entrance tickets, guiding, drinks, crew tips, Abu Simbel and the hot-air balloon are usually extra, so compare those before comparing prices.

Is a dahabiya better than a cruise ship?+

A dahabiya carries 8 to 12 cabins, sails quietly and moors at villages large ships cannot reach, which suits travellers who value atmosphere. A cruise ship offers more facilities, a pool and lower prices.

Does a Nile cruise include Abu Simbel?+

No. Abu Simbel is a separate excursion from Aswan by road or short flight and is normally added to the itinerary rather than included in the sailing.

When is the best time for a Nile cruise?+

October to April, when the sundeck is comfortable all day. Bring a warm layer between November and February, as evenings on the river get cold.
