The Nile at Sailing Speed, Not Cruise-Ship Speed

Luxury Egypt and Dahabiya Journey

Ten private days between Cairo and Aswan aboard a small dahabiya, where the guest list is measured in cabins rather than hundreds.

  • 10 days / 9 nights
  • Cairo · Giza · Luxor · Esna
  • Private

About this journey

A large cruise ship moves 150 people to a schedule. A dahabiya moves a handful of guests to the wind. This journey is designed for travelers who want the Nile without the buffet queue: a small sailing vessel with a limited number of cabins, moorings at sandbanks and villages the big ships pass, and a private Egyptologist who works to your interests rather than a fixed loudspeaker route. Cairo is handled privately from the moment you land, with early access timing at Giza and a slow morning at the Grand Egyptian Museum. Then you fly to Luxor and sail south through Esna, Edfu and Kom Ombo to Aswan. Meals are cooked onboard, days are unhurried, and the itinerary flexes around wind and river conditions rather than a printed timetable.

Why travellers choose this itinerary

  • A small sailing dahabiya rather than a large motor cruiser, with far fewer guests aboard.
  • Moorings at sandbanks and small villages that scheduled cruise ships cannot use.
  • Sailing south from Luxor to Aswan, so the pace slows as the trip goes on.
  • A private Egyptologist for the entire journey, including Cairo and the river.
  • Menus cooked onboard for your group, with dietary requirements handled personally.
  • Timings adapt to wind and river conditions rather than a fixed public schedule.

      Suitability and accessibility

      Physical requirements
Easy to moderate: mostly gentle walking of 1 to 3 miles per day, some sandy riverbank landings and short gangplanks, few early starts and generous rest time aboard.
      Recommended ages
Suited to adults and older children; private family charters welcome. Child pricing and reduced-pace alternatives are available on request.
      Mobility and accessibility
Many ancient sites have uneven paving, sand, steps and no handrails, and some interiors cannot be adapted. We can arrange wheelchair-friendly vehicles, extra assistance and alternative viewing points at most locations, but a small number of tombs and interiors remain inaccessible. Tell us your requirements before booking and we will confirm in writing what is and is not possible on this route.
      Medical and pregnancy notes
Heat, dust and long days can affect travelers with cardiac, respiratory or mobility conditions. Bring your own medication in original packaging. Pregnant travelers should seek medical advice before booking, and adventure, diving and balloon activities are generally not suitable during pregnancy.
      Dietary requirements
Vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher-style, gluten-free and allergy-related requirements can be catered for at hotels, on the river and on private meals when notified in advance. Severe allergies should be declared at the time of booking so we can brief every supplier.
      Weather and seasonality
Best travel months for this route are October, November, December, January, February, March, April. Summer daytime temperatures in Upper Egypt and the desert can exceed 40C, so summer departures are re-timed to start earlier and rest through the afternoon.
      Dress and cultural notes
Egypt is a conservative country outside beach resorts. Lightweight clothing covering shoulders and knees is appropriate at religious sites, and closed walking shoes are strongly recommended for temples and desert ground. Your guide will brief you on photography rules at each site.
