Sleep Under the Stars in a Desert That Used to Be an Ocean

Egypt Desert Expedition: White Desert, Siwa and Alexandria

Nine days across Siwa Oasis, the White Desert and the Black Desert by four-wheel drive, with desert camping and salt-lake swimming.

  • 11 days / 10 nights
  • Cairo · Bahariya Oasis · White Desert · Siwa Oasis
  • Private

About this journey

Egypt's Western Desert is a different country from the Nile Valley. This journey trades temple queues for chalk formations, fossil beds, hot springs and salt lakes so buoyant you cannot sink. You travel by four-wheel drive with an experienced desert crew, camp under a sky with no light pollution, and spend time in Siwa, an oasis with its own language, its own architecture and a mud-brick fortress town at its center. It is not a soft trip: distances are long, camping is simple, and comfort levels depend on the season. It is also the itinerary our repeat travelers rave about most. Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum bookend the desert section, so first-time visitors still see the pyramids. Camping nights can be swapped for lodge accommodation before booking.

Why travellers choose this itinerary

  • A genuine desert camp with no light pollution, run by an experienced local crew.
  • Siwa Oasis included, not just the White Desert day-trip circuit.
  • Four-wheel-drive travel across chalk formations, fossil beds and black volcanic hills.
  • Salt-lake floating and natural hot springs built into the schedule.
  • Giza and the Grand Egyptian Museum still included for first-time visitors.
  • Camping nights can be exchanged for lodge rooms if you prefer a bed.

      Suitability and accessibility

      Physical requirements
Active: long four-wheel-drive days of 5 to 8 hours on rough tracks, soft-sand walking, basic desert camping with shared facilities, wide temperature swings between day and night, and limited cell coverage in the deep desert.
      Recommended ages
Suited to reasonably fit travelers aged 12 and up; not recommended during pregnancy. Child pricing and reduced-pace alternatives are available on request.
      Mobility and accessibility
Many ancient sites have uneven paving, sand, steps and no handrails, and some interiors cannot be adapted. We can arrange wheelchair-friendly vehicles, extra assistance and alternative viewing points at most locations, but a small number of tombs and interiors remain inaccessible. Tell us your requirements before booking and we will confirm in writing what is and is not possible on this route.
      Medical and pregnancy notes
Heat, dust and long days can affect travelers with cardiac, respiratory or mobility conditions. Bring your own medication in original packaging. Pregnant travelers should seek medical advice before booking, and adventure, diving and balloon activities are generally not suitable during pregnancy.
      Dietary requirements
Vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher-style, gluten-free and allergy-related requirements can be catered for at hotels, on the river and on private meals when notified in advance. Severe allergies should be declared at the time of booking so we can brief every supplier.
      Weather and seasonality
Best travel months for this route are October, November, December, January, February, March. Summer daytime temperatures in Upper Egypt and the desert can exceed 40C, so summer departures are re-timed to start earlier and rest through the afternoon.
      Dress and cultural notes
Egypt is a conservative country outside beach resorts. Lightweight clothing covering shoulders and knees is appropriate at religious sites, and closed walking shoes are strongly recommended for temples and desert ground. Your guide will brief you on photography rules at each site.
