Best Time to Visit Egypt for a Luxury Tour

There is a standard answer to this question — October to April — and it is broadly right and slightly lazy. Egypt has microclimates, a peak season that fills the Valley of the Kings by 9am, and shoulder months that are excellent value if you plan the day correctly. Here is how we actually advise travellers choosing dates.

The short answer

October to April is the comfortable season for a full Cairo–Luxor–Aswan itinerary. November to February is the peak of it: perfect sightseeing weather, the highest prices, and the busiest sites. May to September is hot in Cairo and genuinely severe in Upper Egypt, but it is cheaper, quieter, and entirely workable with early starts — and it is the best time for the Red Sea.

What actually drives the decision

Heat tolerance

Upper Egypt in July is not the same experience as Cairo in July. Luxor's west bank regularly passes 43°C, and the tombs hold that heat. If you travel in summer we start at 5:30 or 6am, finish sightseeing by late morning, and return to the ship or hotel for the afternoon. Travellers who accept that rhythm often love summer: the temples are almost empty. Travellers who want to wander at midday should come between November and March.

Crowds

Peak-season Giza and the Valley of the Kings are busy from mid-morning. This is solvable rather than fatal — private guiding means you arrive at opening, take sites in reverse order to the coach groups, and use the quieter tombs. That is much of what a private Egyptologist guide is actually for.

Price

Rates for the best hotels and cruise ships swing significantly by season, with Christmas, New Year and Easter at the top. May, June and September usually buy noticeably more comfort for the same budget — a suite instead of a standard cabin, or a dahabiya instead of a larger ship.

The river is at its most pleasant from October to April, when the sundeck is usable all day and evenings are cool rather than cold. December and January nights genuinely need a jacket. Best time for the Red Sea

The Red Sea inverts the calendar. Hurghada, El Gouna and Marsa Alam are at their best from May to October, when the water is warm and the heat is coastal rather than desert. Winter diving is still good but the wind picks up. This is why so many of our itineraries put a Red Sea extension at the end of a summer trip.

Ramadan and public holidays

Ramadan moves roughly eleven days earlier each year. Sites and museums stay open, but hours shift, some restaurants close during daylight, and the atmosphere after sunset is one of the most memorable things you can witness in Egypt. It is not a reason to avoid travel — it is a reason to plan the day differently and to be considerate about eating and drinking in public. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha bring domestic travel surges; book internal flights early around those dates.

Two dates worth planning around

• First trip, comfort first: November, February or March.
• Best value with good weather: October or early April.
• Quiet temples, low prices, early starts: May, September.
• Beach and diving focus: June to September.

Winter is the undisputed best time for sightseeing in Upper Egypt (Luxor and Aswan). Temperatures hover between 18°C and 24°C, making it comfortable to spend hours exploring the Valley of the Kings or Karnak Temple. However, this is also when crowds are at their peak and luxury hotels command premium rates.

Spring (March - May) & Autumn (September - November): The Sweet Spots

For travelers seeking the perfect balance of weather and value, the shoulder seasons are ideal. March and April offer pleasant warmth, though the occasional 'Khamsin' wind can bring dust storms. October and November see the intense summer heat fade, leaving perfect conditions for both desert exploration and Red Sea diving.

Summer (June - August): The Value Seeker's Choice

While temperatures in Luxor can exceed 40°C, summer offers exceptional value for luxury travelers. You can often secure suites at iconic properties like the Old Cataract in Aswan for a fraction of the winter price.
